Hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP-beta-CD) enhances sunscreen photostability in lotions. This study confirms HP-beta-CD inclusion complexes improve the stability of oxybenzone, octocrylene, and ethylhexyl-methoxy-cinnamate against photodegradation.
Area of Science:
- Pharmaceutical Sciences
- Materials Science
- Photochemistry
Background:
- Sunscreen agents like oxybenzone, octocrylene, and ethylhexyl-methoxy-cinnamate are crucial for UV protection.
- These agents can degrade upon UV exposure, reducing their efficacy.
- Cyclodextrins are known to form inclusion complexes, potentially improving drug stability.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the impact of hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP-beta-CD) concentration on sunscreen physicochemical properties.
- To evaluate the photostability enhancement of oxybenzone, octocrylene, and ethylhexyl-methoxy-cinnamate in aqueous and cream formulations.
Main Methods:
- Formation of inclusion complexes studied using UV-vis spectrophotometry, DSC, SEM, and 13C-NMR.
- Photodegradation of sunscreen agents in lotion assessed via UV-vis spectrophotometry and HPLC.
- Concentration-dependent effects of HP-beta-CD were analyzed.
Main Results:
- Inclusion complex formation was confirmed by DSC, SEM, and 13C-NMR.
- HP-beta-CD complexation significantly enhanced the photostability of sunscreen agents in lotion.
- Octocrylene photostability increased six- to eightfold; ethylhexyl-methoxy-cinnamate isomerization was controlled by HP-beta-CD concentration.
Conclusions:
- HP-beta-CD effectively enhances the photostability of tested sunscreen agents in lotion formulations.
- HP-beta-CD can be employed as a photostabilizer additive to improve sunscreen efficacy and longevity.
