Summary

This study shows ultrasound and CT scans can effectively detect fatty liver disease. CT scans help clarify ambiguous ultrasound findings, improving diagnosis of fatty infiltration and "skip areas".

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the combined utility of ultrasound (US) and computed tomography (CT) in diagnosing diffuse and subtotal fatty liver infiltration.
  • To resolve discrepancies between US and CT findings in fatty liver disease.

Main Methods:

  • Fifty-five patients with suspected fatty liver underwent US and CT of the upper abdomen.
  • Liver echogenicity on US was assessed; CT density measurements (liver and spleen) were used for quantification.
  • Comparison of US findings (including "skip areas") with CT attenuation values.

  • US identified normal echogenicity in 30 patients and increased echogenicity ("bright liver") in 25.
  • CT attenuation values correlated well with liver fat content, decreasing as fat increased.
  • CT confirmed US findings in typical "skip areas" and helped characterize atypical ones, distinguishing normal tissue from fatty infiltration.

Conclusions:

  • Combined US and CT enhance the diagnosis of fatty liver infiltration.
  • CT is valuable for quantifying liver fat and clarifying equivocal US findings, especially in atypical "skip areas".
