Background:

Ingrown toenails (IGTN) have multiple suspected causes, with poor nail cutting technique widely believed to be a primary factor.
Limited formal research exists on the multifactorial etiology of IGTN.

Purpose of the Study:

To test the hypothesis that reduced visual acuity leads to improper nail trimming, contributing to ingrown toenail formation.
Investigating the potential role of visual impairment in the pathogenesis of IGTN.

Main Methods:

A prospective case-control study compared visual acuity in 19 patients with IGTN to 24 age- and sex-matched controls.
Both near and distance visual acuity were assessed. Statistical analysis used the Mann-Whitney U-test, with P < 0.05 considered significant.

Main Results:

No statistically significant difference in visual acuity (near or distance) was observed between the ingrown toenail group and the control group (P = 0.33).
The findings do not support a correlation between visual acuity and the presence of IGTN.

Conclusions:

Reduced visual acuity is unlikely to be a significant contributing factor in the development of ingrown toenails.
Further research may be needed to explore other potential etiological factors for IGTN.
