Rous Sarcoma Virus (RSV) and Cancer

6.4K
Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. His experiments clearly demonstrated that some cancers could be caused by infectious agents and led to the discovery of many more cancer-causing viruses in animals as well as humans.
RSV is a retrovirus that contains two copies of a plus-strand  RNA genome. Its genome consists of four main open...

Consider extremity sarcoma in patients with persistent thigh masses after minor trauma. Delayed diagnosis is common, with symptoms worsening over time, indicating a need for vigilance.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Oncology
  • Musculoskeletal Radiology
  • Diagnostic Imaging

Background:

  • Soft tissue masses in the thigh are often initially misdiagnosed as benign conditions like muscle strains or hematomas.
  • Minor trauma can sometimes mask or trigger the presentation of underlying neoplastic processes.

Observation:

  • Two cases presented with asymptomatic thigh masses initially attributed to trauma.
  • Over several months, patients developed severe systemic symptoms including fever, anemia, and elevated inflammatory markers.

Findings:

  • Both cases were ultimately diagnosed with extremity sarcoma, highlighting a common delay in diagnosis.
  • Key indicators for sarcoma include long-standing duration, pain disproportionate to trauma, deep fascial involvement, size > 5 cm, rapid growth, fixation, and solid consistency.

Implications:

  • Emphasizes the importance of considering sarcoma in the differential diagnosis of persistent or worsening thigh masses.
  • Highlights the need for advanced imaging and potentially biopsy in cases with concerning features to avoid diagnostic delays.
