Infants perceive illusory squares rotating, but struggle with their expansion/contraction. This study reveals early visual perception of the rotational dynamic illusion in infants aged 3-8 months.
Area of Science:
- Visual Perception
- Developmental Psychology
- Cognitive Science
Background:
- The Kanizsa square is an illusory figure perceived despite absent lines.
- Adults perceive both rotation and expansion/contraction in a rotating Kanizsa square (rotational dynamic illusion).
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate if infants perceive the rotational dynamic illusion.
- To determine the age at which infants perceive this illusion and its components.
Main Methods:
- A fixed-trial familiarization method was used to present the rotating Kanizsa square.
- Experiments involved infants aged 3-8 months.
- Infants' perception was assessed by observing their responses to the visual stimuli.
Main Results:
- Infants aged 3-8 months perceived the rotating Kanizsa square.
- 3-4-month-old infants perceived the rotational dynamic illusion as simple rotation.
- Infants had difficulty extracting expansion/contraction motion from the illusion.
Conclusions:
- Early visual development includes the perception of illusory shapes like the Kanizsa square.
- While infants perceive illusory rotation, extracting complex motion components develops later.
- This research sheds light on the developmental trajectory of visual motion perception in infants.
