Fourier domain optical coherence tomography (FD-OCT) excels at detecting microcrystal deposits in Bietti crystalline dystrophy (BCD). This advanced imaging may aid in understanding and monitoring this rare retinal condition.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Medical Imaging
- Genetics
Background:
- Bietti crystalline dystrophy (BCD) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by progressive visual impairment.
- Ocular manifestations include corneal and retinal crystalline deposits, leading to vision loss.
Observation:
- A 32-year-old female presented with nyctalopia and moderate visual loss.
- Fundus examination revealed retinal pigment epithelium atrophy and choroidal sclerosis.
- Corneal and retinal microcrystal deposits were noted.
Findings:
- Fourier domain optical coherence tomography (FD-OCT) identified microcrystal deposits in all retinal layers, with diameters ranging from 18 to 100 micrometers.
- Time domain optical coherence tomography (TD-OCT) did not reveal these deposits.
- Visual field constriction and impaired electrophysiology were observed.
Implications:
- FD-OCT demonstrates superior sensitivity compared to TD-OCT for visualizing microcrystals in BCD.
- FD-OCT may be a valuable tool for the diagnosis, understanding, and longitudinal monitoring of Bietti crystalline dystrophy.
