Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and non-pharmacological methods have improved obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) treatment. While not all patients achieve remission, current options enhance quality of life and social adjustment.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Neurology
Background:
- Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have significantly advanced obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) treatment.
- This progress has spurred interest in developing novel therapeutic strategies, including non-pharmacological interventions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To provide a comprehensive review of current pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for OCD.
- To critically evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of various OCD management approaches.
Main Methods:
- A systematic literature search of MEDLINE and PubMed databases (1980-2009) was conducted.
- Keywords included OCD, clomipramine, SSRIs, treatment resistance, response predictors, cognitive-behavioral therapy, exposure and response prevention, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, deep brain stimulation, neurosurgery, and electroconvulsive therapy.
Main Results:
- The review details the benefits and drawbacks of established OCD treatments.
- It emphasizes the identification of resistance patterns and clinical predictors of treatment response.
Conclusions:
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is manageable with existing therapeutic options.
- While complete remission is not universal, symptom improvement enhances patient quality of life and social functioning.
