Summary

Optic nerve gliomas and optic sheath meningiomas impact vision negatively. While gliomas have excellent survival, meningiomas offer an excellent life prognosis, especially in adults.

Area of Science:

  • Neuro-oncology
  • Ophthalmology

Background:

  • Optic nerve gliomas are pediatric astrocytic neoplasms with poor visual prognosis.
  • Optic sheath meningiomas affect adults, with good life prognosis but poor visual outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To differentiate the prognosis and characteristics of optic nerve gliomas and optic sheath meningiomas.

Main Methods:

  • Review of clinical presentations and outcomes for optic nerve gliomas and optic sheath meningiomas.

Main Results:

  • Optic nerve gliomas: excellent survival if confined to optic nerves; poor prognosis with chiasm/hypothalamus involvement; no effective therapy.
  • Optic sheath meningiomas: excellent life prognosis, but poor visual prognosis.

Conclusions:

  • Prognosis varies significantly between optic nerve gliomas and optic sheath meningiomas based on location and patient age.
  • Vision prognosis is poor for both tumor types, but life expectancy differs.
