Rous Sarcoma Virus (RSV) and Cancer

Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. Tumor Progression

Tumor progression is a phenomenon where the pre-formed tumor acquires successive mutations to become clinically more aggressive and malignant. In the 1950s, Foulds first described the stepwise progression of cancer cells through successive stages.

Background:

Observation:

  • A 30-year-old male presented with a 5 cm testicular tumor.
  • Histopathology revealed classical seminoma with an 8 mm nodule.
  • The nodule showed spindle cells with low-grade atypia, S100 protein expression, and high proliferative activity.

Findings:

  • This case represents the first documented instance of a pure classical seminoma associated with a low-grade sarcomatous component.
  • The sarcomatous nodule was distinct from the seminoma and adjacent to intratubular germ cell neoplasia.

Implications:

  • This unique tumor presentation expands the spectrum of germ cell tumors.
