Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF) is a severe tick-borne illness caused by Rickettsia rickettsii, a Gram-negative, coccobacillary bacterium. This pathogen is an obligate intracellular parasite, requiring a host cell for replication. Transmission occurs through the bite of an infected tick. This study reports three cases of endometriosis co-occurring with Lyme disease. One patient successfully conceived via IVF-ET, suggesting potential treatment avenues for infertility in these patients.

Background:

  • Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting women of reproductive age.
  • Lyme disease, caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, is a tick-borne illness that can present with diverse symptoms.

Observation:

  • Three cases of endometriosis patients (0.8% of 405) were diagnosed with Lyme disease.
  • All patients presented with erythema migrans, fever, and fatigue, with positive serology for Borrelia burgdorferi.

Findings:

  • Two patients underwent In Vitro Fertilization with Embryo Transfer (IVF-ET).
  • One patient achieved pregnancy in the first IVF-ET cycle, with an uncomplicated pregnancy and childbirth.

Implications:

  • The co-existence of endometriosis and Lyme disease is rare and warrants further investigation.
  • Successful IVF-ET in a patient with both conditions suggests potential fertility treatment options.
