  • Utilized linked Health and Retirement Study and Medicare data (1992-2005) for 625 elderly US participants with normal baseline cognition.

  • Excellent vision reduced dementia risk by 63%.

Conclusions:

  • Untreated poor vision is a significant risk factor for cognitive decline, particularly Alzheimer disease.
  • Ophthalmologic care and maintaining good vision may play a protective role against dementia in the elderly.
  • Further research is warranted to explore the mechanisms linking vision health and cognitive function.
