Summary

Treadmill exercise tests yield higher maximal oxygen uptake than cycle ergometer tests in patients with heart disease and healthy subjects. Ramp protocols show a better oxygen uptake to work rate ratio compared to standard protocols.

Background:

  • Understanding the differences in physiological responses between treadmill and cycle ergometer tests is crucial for accurate patient assessment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the hemodynamic and gas exchange responses between ramp treadmill and cycle ergometer protocols versus standard exercise protocols.
  • To evaluate maximal oxygen uptake and the ratio of oxygen uptake to work rate across different exercise modalities and protocols.

Main Methods:

  • Ten patients with chronic heart failure, ten asymptomatic coronary artery disease (CAD) patients, eleven angina-limited CAD patients, and ten healthy controls performed maximal exercise.
  • Six protocols were used: Bruce, Balke, individualized ramp treadmill; and 25 W/stage, 50 W/stage, individualized ramp cycle ergometer.
