Targeted Cancer Therapies02:57

Targeted Cancer Therapies

The targeted cancer therapies, also known as “molecular targeted therapies,” take advantage of the molecular and genetic differences between the cancer cells and the normal cells. It needs a thorough understanding of the cancer cells to develop drugs that can target specific molecular aspects that drive the growth, progression, and spread of cancer cells without affecting the growth and survival of other normal cells in the body.
There are several types of targeted therapies against specific...
Tumor Progression02:07

Tumor Progression

Tumor progression is a phenomenon where the pre-formed tumor acquires successive mutations to become clinically more aggressive and malignant. In the 1950s, Foulds first described the stepwise progression of cancer cells through successive stages.
Colon cancer is one of the best-documented examples of tumor progression. Early mutation in the APC gene in colon cells causes a small growth on the colon wall called a polyp. With time, this polyp grows into a benign, pre-cancerous tumor. Further...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Cholangiocarcinoma, a rare liver cancer, has poor survival rates. Recent studies show promising survival rates with neoadjuvant chemoradiation and liver transplantation for select patients.

Area of Science:

  • Hepatobiliary surgery
  • Surgical oncology
  • Transplant surgery

Background:

  • Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is the second most common primary liver tumor.
  • Most patients lack identifiable risk factors, and extrahepatic CCA is common.
  • CCA has a poor prognosis with limited treatment options and high recurrence rates after resection.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of neoadjuvant chemoradiation followed by liver transplantation for cholangiocarcinoma.
  • To assess survival outcomes in patients with cholangiocarcinoma undergoing this combined treatment strategy.

Main Methods:

  • Review of recent studies on neoadjuvant chemoradiation and liver transplantation for cholangiocarcinoma.
  • Analysis of survival data, focusing on five-year survival rates.
  • Comparison of outcomes with standard treatment options and other liver transplant indications.

Main Results:

  • Neoadjuvant chemoradiation combined with liver transplantation shows impressive five-year survival rates (76-82%) in highly selected patients.
  • These survival rates are comparable to those for hepatocellular carcinoma or hepatitis C-induced cirrhosis.
  • Current data primarily comes from a single center, highlighting the need for broader validation.

Conclusions:

  • Liver transplantation following neoadjuvant chemoradiation offers a potential survival benefit for select cholangiocarcinoma patients.
  • This approach may represent a viable option for patients with potentially resectable disease.
  • Further multi-center validation is crucial for wider application of this treatment strategy.
