Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a condition where breathing stops intermittently during sleep, often leading to significant health issues. Each episode can last from 10 to 20 seconds or more and is frequently accompanied by a brief arousal from sleep. Background:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder.
  • Previous research suggested a correlation between hyoid bone position and OSA severity.
  • The sella-hyoid (S-H) distance is a cephalometric measurement used to assess hyoid bone verticality.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between the sella-hyoid (S-H) distance and the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
  • To evaluate the potential of S-H distance as a screening tool for OSA.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 106 patients treated with mandibular advancement splint (MAS) for sleep disordered breathing.
  • Lateral cephalograms were analyzed to measure the S-H distance prior to MAS therapy.
  • Correlation analysis was performed between S-H distance and OSA severity (Apnea-Hypopnea Index).

Main Results:

  • The mean S-H distance was 125.5 mm.
  • No significant correlation was found between S-H distance and OSA severity (Pearson correlation coefficient = -0.034).
  • The S-H distance did not differ significantly across different levels of OSA severity.

Conclusions:

  • The vertical position of the hyoid bone, as measured by S-H distance, is not correlated with OSA severity.
  • S-H distance is not recommended as a substitute for established diagnostic tests for OSA.
