Summary

Bradycardia during temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthroscopy is a rare event. Oral surgeons must recognize this potential trigeminal-vagal reflex (TVR) during TMJ arthroscopy to ensure patient safety.

Area of Science:

  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Anesthesiology
  • Cardiology

Background:

  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthroscopy is a common procedure.
  • Bradycardia, a slowed heart rate, can occur during surgical procedures.
  • The trigeminal-vagal reflex (TVR) is a known physiological response.

Observation:

  • A case of bradycardia was observed during TMJ arthroscopy.
  • This specific instance of bradycardia during TMJ arthroscopy, potentially linked to a trigeminal-vagal reflex (TVR), has not been previously documented in existing literature.

Findings:

  • Bradycardia occurred during TMJ arthroscopy.
  • A similar case involving a trigeminal-vagal reflex (TVR) during this procedure is unprecedented.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Oral and maxillofacial surgeons performing TMJ arthroscopy must be aware of this potential reflex.
  • Recognition and management of this reflex are crucial for patient safety during TMJ arthroscopy.
