Ischemic Stroke l: Introduction

Ischemic stroke is an acute cerebrovascular condition in which blood flow to a brain region is suddenly interrupted, leading to tissue infarction. Neurons depend on continuous oxygen and glucose supply, so even brief reductions in perfusion cause energy failure, ionic imbalance, and irreversible injury. Summary

Serum interleukin-10 (IL-10) levels are elevated after acute ischemic stroke (IS) and predict patient outcomes. Higher IL-10 levels correlate with severe neurological impairment and adverse clinical events.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prognostic value of serum IL-10 levels in patients post-acute IS.
  • To determine if elevated IL-10 levels after IS predict clinical outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Serum IL-10 levels were measured 48 hours after acute IS in 135 patients.
  • Control groups included 20 healthy individuals and 30 at-risk individuals.
  • Neurological impairment was assessed using the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS).

Main Results:

  • IS patients exhibited significantly higher mean serum IL-10 compared to both control groups (p < 0.0001).

  • Elevated IL-10 levels are associated with stroke severity and long-term adverse events.
