Background:

The scope of dietetics practice has evolved, necessitating a clearer understanding of advanced roles.
Existing definitions of advanced practice (AP) in dietetics lack comprehensive consensus.
International perspectives on AP were considered to inform a global understanding.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop a definition, description, and framework for advanced practice (AP) in dietetics.
To guide future dietetic education, research agendas, and policy development.
To establish a clear differentiation between AP and entry-level dietetic practice.

Main Methods:

A mixed-methods approach involving a literature review, stakeholder discussions, and two survey phases.
Phase 1 utilized a 36-item survey with key stakeholders (n=136).
Phase 2 employed a modified Delphi approach with a random sample of dietitians (n=885) using a 50-item survey.

Main Results:

High agreement (83%) that a depth and breadth definition captured all dietetic roles.
Strong consensus (95%) that the definition differentiated AP from entry-level practice.
Response rates were 40% for Phase 1 and 35% for Phase 2.

Conclusions:

A framework for advanced practice in dietetics has been established.
Discrepancies in Phase 2 results highlight needs for professional development in leadership, mentorship, and outcome measurement.
The developed framework provides a foundation for advancing the dietetics profession.
