Embryonic Stem Cells00:57

Embryonic Stem Cells

Embryonic stem (ES) cells were first discovered in mice in 1981 by Martin Evans. In 1998, James Thomson identified a method to isolate embryonic stem cells from humans. Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) are obtained from 3-5 day old embryos that remain unused after an in vitro fertilization procedure.
ES cells are grown in a culture medium where they can divide indefinitely, creating ES cell lines. Under certain conditions, ES cells can differentiate, either spontaneously into a variety of...

Embryonic Stem Cells

Embryonic stem (ES) cells are undifferentiated pluripotent cells, meaning they can produce any cell type in the body. This gives them tremendous potential in science and medicine since they can generate specific cell types for use in research or to replace body cells lost due to damage or disease.

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma (UES) is rare in adults. Multiphase liver CT is crucial for diagnosing liver tumors when the specific type is unknown.

Area of Science:

  • Hepatobiliary Malignancies
  • Pediatric Oncology
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma (UES) is a rare hepatic malignancy, primarily affecting children.
  • The etiology of UES remains largely unknown, complicating tumor classification.
  • UES is exceptionally uncommon in adult populations.

Observation:

  • This study details a rare case of UES in a 19-year-old pregnant woman.
  • The patient experienced a stillborn delivery and subsequently succumbed to the disease.
  • The case highlights the diagnostic challenges posed by UES in adults.

Findings:

  • Medical imaging plays a critical role in the differential diagnosis of UES.
  • Multiphase liver computed tomography (CT) protocols are effective in visualizing liver abnormalities.
  • CT demonstrates comprehensive details of various liver cancers and lesions.

Implications:

  • Multiphase liver CT is the preferred imaging modality for suspected liver abnormalities of unknown type.
  • Accurate and timely diagnosis through advanced imaging is vital for patient management.
  • Further research into UES etiology may improve diagnostic accuracy and treatment strategies.
