McNemar's Test is a nonparametric statistical test used to determine if there is a significant difference in proportions between two related groups when the outcome is binary (e.g., yes/no, success/failure). Background:

  • Mismatch Negativity (MMN) is an endogenous auditory evoked potential reflecting auditory processing.
  • Understanding MMN changes with aging is crucial for assessing auditory function in the elderly.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize MMN responses in elderly subjects.
  • To compare MMN responses between elderly and adult subjects.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study of 30 elderly subjects (60-80 years old).
  • Included medical evaluation, audiometry, immittance tests, otoacoustic emissions, and MMN recordings.
  • Mann-Whitney statistical test was employed.

Main Results:

  • Mean MMN latency in women: 148.67-161.33 ms; in men: 159.07-171 ms.
  • Mean MMN amplitude in women: -2.177 to -2.753 µV; in men: -1.847 to -1.953 µV.
  • No significant differences in latency or amplitude were found between genders or hemispheres in the elderly.

Conclusions:

  • Elderly subjects exhibit MMN responses comparable to younger adults.
  • No statistically significant differences were observed in MMN latency or amplitude based on gender, hemispheric side, or age group comparison.
  • MMN appears robust across genders and hemispheres in the elderly population.
