    Area of Science:

    • Optics and Spectroscopy
    • Instrumentation Science

    Background:

    • Monochromators are essential for spectral analysis.
    • Existing designs face limitations in aberration control and usable wavelength range.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To present a new Eagle-type monochromator mounting for concave gratings.
    • To evaluate its performance in terms of aberrations and spectral range.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized an off-plane Eagle mounting at 45 degrees with ruled concave gratings.
    • Investigated the use of spherical, cylindrical, ellipsoidal, and toroidal gratings.
    • Analyzed optical aberrations including astigmatism and comatic broadening.
    • Calculated the performance at varying angles of incidence (0-15 degrees).

    Main Results:

    • Achieved reduced astigmatism, especially with toroidal or ellipsoidal gratings.
    • Demonstrated minimal comatic aberration, proportional to the angle of incidence.
    • Showcased small width-dependent spherical aberration, also proportional to the angle of incidence.
    • Projected a reduction in the low wavelength limit by a factor of √2 compared to conventional mountings.

    Conclusions:

    • The new monochromator design offers improved image quality and reduced aberrations.
    • It shows significant potential for extending measurements into the far ultraviolet spectral region.
    • This advancement can benefit various applications requiring high-performance spectroscopy.
