Most pediatric residency programs desire ophthalmology education, yet many lack formal training or face dissatisfaction. New pediatric ophthalmology programs are needed to improve curricula and ophthalmologist involvement.

Background:

Ophthalmology education is crucial for pediatric residents to identify and manage eye conditions.
Current ophthalmology curricula in US pediatric residency programs vary significantly.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the current state of ophthalmology education within United States pediatric residency programs.
To identify program directors' satisfaction levels and desired improvements in ophthalmology training.

Main Methods:

A mail survey was distributed to 187 directors of pediatric residency programs across the United States.
The survey collected data on existing ophthalmology curricula, satisfaction, and preferred educational formats.

Main Results:

A 73% response rate (137 surveys) was achieved.
Pediatric ophthalmology is included in 72% of programs, with 28% lacking it.
88% of directors desired formal ophthalmology programs, citing time constraints and lack of available ophthalmologists as key issues.

Conclusions:

A majority of pediatric residency program directors seek formal ophthalmology education, but a significant portion is dissatisfied with current offerings.
Development of pediatric ophthalmology training programs is recommended to address these educational gaps.
Active participation from ophthalmologists is encouraged to support these training initiatives.
