Men face unique challenges in substance abuse treatment.
Traditional therapeutic approaches may not fully address male-specific issues.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify and elaborate on twelve critical considerations for therapists working with male clients in substance abuse groups.
To provide a framework for understanding the complexities of male socialization and its impact on addiction recovery.

Main Methods:

Qualitative analysis of clinical experiences and theoretical frameworks.
Development of a comprehensive list of considerations based on established research and clinical practice.

Main Results:

Twelve key considerations for working with men in substance abuse treatment were identified.
These include understanding masculinity, male socialization, therapist gender, paternal and filial relationships, male friendships, and sexual issues.

Conclusions:

Therapists need specialized knowledge to effectively engage men in substance abuse treatment.
