Binge Eating Disorders01:23

Binge Eating Disorders

Binge eating disorder is a significant mental health condition characterized by recurrent episodes of excessive food consumption within a short period, accompanied by a perceived loss of control over eating behavior. Unlike occasional overeating, binge eating disorder is marked by distressing emotions such as guilt, shame, and anxiety following binge episodes. The disorder affects individuals across different ages and backgrounds, with profound implications for physical and psychological...
Bulimia Nervosa01:30

Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia nervosa is a complex and severe eating disorder characterized by a cyclical pattern of binge-and-purge eating pattern. It generally involves an episode of binge eating, followed by compensatory behaviors such as vomiting, excessive exercise, laxative use, or fasting, to prevent weight gain. Despite often maintaining a normal weight, individuals with bulimia are intensely preoccupied with their body image and harbor an overwhelming fear of gaining weight. This can contribute to the...
Anorexia Nervosa01:28

Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia nervosa is a complex and severe eating disorder characterized by an intense fear of weight gain, an unrelenting pursuit of thinness, and a distorted body image. It often leads to dangerously low body weight relative to an individual's age and height. This disorder is marked by significant physical and psychological consequences, making it one of the most life-threatening psychiatric illnesses.

Introduction to Psychological Disorders01:19

Introduction to Psychological Disorders

Abnormal behavior, often referred to as mental illness, results from changes in brain function that influence thought patterns, behaviors, and social interactions. Psychologists and psychiatrists typically assess abnormal behavior using three primary criteria: deviance, maladaptation, and personal distress, particularly when these traits persist over long periods.
Deviant Behavior
Deviance in behavior refers to actions or thought patterns that significantly diverge from societal norms or...
Depressive Disorders: MDD and Dysthymia01:27

Depressive Disorders: MDD and Dysthymia

Depressive disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by pervasive feelings of sadness, diminished pleasure in life, and a significant impact on daily functioning. These conditions are most prevalent in individuals during their 30s and affect women at twice the rate of men. Contrary to popular belief, younger individuals are generally more susceptible to these disorders than older adults. Two key types of depressive disorders include Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and...
Stress and Mental Health01:30

Stress and Mental Health

Chronic stress profoundly affects mental health, significantly influencing mood, behavior, and overall quality of life. Research closely links chronic stress with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Ongoing exposure to stress can lead to physiological and psychological changes, initiating a cycle of emotional distress and maladaptive coping mechanisms.
Individuals with depression often experience challenges in both their personal and professional...

Summary

Mental health conditions and specific eating behaviors like grazing impact long-term weight loss maintenance after a very-low-calorie diet program. Addressing these can improve self-regulation and sustained weight management.

Area of Science:

  • Obesity Research
  • Behavioral Medicine
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Weight loss maintenance remains a significant challenge for many individuals.
  • Very-low-calorie diets (VLCDs) can achieve initial success but long-term adherence is difficult.
  • The role of mental health disorders in sustained weight management is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the influence of mental disorders on weight loss maintenance.
  • To identify factors associated with successful long-term weight management following a VLCD program.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective longitudinal study followed 251 obese individuals for 4 years.
  • Mental disorders and eating patterns were assessed using structured interviews and questionnaires.
  • Intention-to-treat analysis was employed to evaluate weight loss maintenance at 3-year follow-up.

Main Results:

  • Of 166 initial successful weight losers, only 28.3% maintained ≥5% weight loss at 3 years.
  • History of substance abuse/dependence and pre-treatment grazing predicted successful maintenance.
  • High cognitive control and low disinhibition at follow-up were also associated with sustained weight loss.

Conclusions:

  • Overcoming mental health challenges may enhance self-regulation and cognitive control over eating.
  • Interventions targeting mental health and eating behaviors could improve long-term weight loss maintenance.
  • Sustained weight management requires addressing psychological factors alongside dietary changes.
