Area of Science:

  • Geriatric Dentistry
  • Dental Implantology
  • Patient Care

Background:

  • Implant-supported dentures present unique challenges for dependent patients requiring assistance with daily oral hygiene.
  • A growing demand for specialized oral care is anticipated for patients with implant-supported dentures.

Observation:

  • Three case reports highlight the need for careful consideration before implant insertion in dependent elderly individuals.
  • Assessing patient cooperation, support networks, and accessibility to professional care is crucial.

Findings:

  • Dependent elderly individuals can achieve benefits from oral implants when appropriate aftercare is ensured.
  • Implant removal is feasible if necessary by disabling the anchorage system.
  • An 'implant passport' and regular communication with care providers are vital for patient management.
