Two novel phenylethylchromone compounds were identified in Chinese eaglewood (Aquilaria sinensis). These compounds were structurally elucidated using advanced spectroscopic techniques.
Area of Science:
- Natural Product Chemistry
- Organic Chemistry
- Pharmacognosy
Background:
- Aquilaria sinensis, commonly known as Chinese eaglewood, is a valuable plant source.
- Chromone derivatives are known for their diverse biological activities.
Purpose of the Study:
- To isolate and characterize new compounds from Aquilaria sinensis.
- To elucidate the chemical structures of novel phenylethylchromones.
Main Methods:
- Isolation of compounds using chromatographic techniques.
- Structure elucidation via Mass Spectrometry (MS) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.
- Comparison of spectral data with existing literature.
Main Results:
- Two new 2-(2-phenylethyl)chromone derivatives were successfully isolated.
- The structures were confirmed as (5S(*),6R(*),7S(*))-5,6,7-trihydroxy-2-(3-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenethyl)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-4H-chromen-4-one (1) and (5S(*),6R(*),7R(*))-5,6,7-trihydroxy-2-(3-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenethyl)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-4H-chromen-4-one (2).
- Detailed MS and NMR analyses provided unambiguous structural assignments.
Conclusions:
- The study successfully identified and characterized two new phenylethylchromone compounds from Aquilaria sinensis.
- The findings contribute to the understanding of the chemical constituents of Chinese eaglewood.
- The characterized compounds may serve as leads for further pharmacological investigations.

Aromatic ring substitutions: Substituting the aromatic ring with –OH groups at positions 3 and 4 yields catecholamines (e.g., epinephrine), which have a high affinity for adrenoceptors. Hydrogen bonding between –OH groups and receptors enhances adrenergic activity.
