Summary

Blood transfusions carry a small risk of infectious agent transmission due to the "window period." Nucleic acid amplification testing (NAT) for HIV and HCV has improved blood safety, but ongoing vigilance for emerging pathogens like West Nile Virus (WNV) is crucial.
