Bullying02:04

Bullying

A modern form of aggression is bullying. As you learn in your study of child development, socializing and playing with other children is beneficial for children’s psychological development. However, as you may have experienced as a child, not all play behavior has positive outcomes. Some children are aggressive and want to play roughly. Other children are selfish and do not want to share toys. One form of negative social interactions among children that has become a national concern is bullying.
Conduct Disorder01:28

Conduct Disorder

Conduct disorder is a complex mental health diagnosis characterized by a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior that violates societal norms, the rights of others, or age-appropriate rules. The diagnostic criteria for conduct disorder require the presence of at least three problematic behaviors within the past 12 months, with at least one occurring in the past six months. These behaviors are grouped into four categories: aggression toward people and animals; destruction of property;...
Aggression01:47

Aggression

Humans engage in aggression when they seek to cause harm or pain to another person. Aggression takes two forms depending on one’s motives: hostile or instrumental. Hostile aggression is motivated by feelings of anger with intent to cause pain; a fight in a bar with a stranger is an example of hostile aggression. In contrast, instrumental aggression is motivated by achieving a goal and does not necessarily involve intent to cause pain (Berkowitz, 1993); a contract killer who murders for hire...
Cognitive Development During Adolescence01:18

Cognitive Development During Adolescence

During adolescence, individuals experience significant cognitive development that enhances their understanding of others' emotions and thoughts, known as cognitive empathy. This period is marked by an increased ability to adapt to others' perspectives and a more nuanced understanding of others' mental states, a skill that is foundational for social problem-solving and conflict avoidance. The development of cognitive empathy relies heavily on the theory of mind — the recognition that people have...
Influence of Parents and Peers on Identity01:23

Influence of Parents and Peers on Identity

Adolescence is a pivotal period of identity formation, during which individuals begin to answer questions central to their sense of self, such as "Who am I?" and "Who do I hope to become?" Both parents and peers play critical roles in guiding adolescents through this complex developmental phase.
Parental Influence on Identity Development
Parents serve as primary guides and managers in an adolescent's life, offering support instrumental in decision-making and personal growth. This guiding role...
Self-Evaluation: Self-Enhancement and Self-Verification03:00

Self-Evaluation: Self-Enhancement and Self-Verification

Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Summary

Early adolescents engaging in online aggression often spend more time online and are targets of such behavior. Offline aggression and supportive beliefs also predict internet aggression.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Cyberpsychology
  • Adolescent Development

Background:

  • Internet aggression is a growing concern among early adolescents.
  • Understanding predictors of online aggression is crucial for intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine concurrent and longitudinal predictors of early adolescents' involvement in Internet aggression.
  • To differentiate between youth aggressive online only, offline only, and both online and offline.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional survey (N=330) and longitudinal study (N=150) with early adolescents.
  • Assessed time spent on communication technologies, victimization, offline aggression, and supportive beliefs.

Main Results:

  • Higher Internet aggression linked to more communication technology use and being a target of online aggression.
  • Offline relational aggression and supportive beliefs predicted concurrent Internet aggression.
  • Youth aggressive both online and offline were older, targeted online, and held stronger beliefs supporting relational aggression.

Conclusions:

  • Internet aggression is associated with online behaviors, victimization, and offline aggression/beliefs.
  • A distinct profile emerges for adolescents exhibiting both online and offline aggression.
  • Findings inform targeted prevention and intervention strategies for adolescent online behavior.
