Summary

Supernumerary breast tissue, or polymastia, can develop benign fibroadenomas, mimicking axillary lymphadenopathy. Early diagnosis of ectopic breast tissue is crucial for appropriate surgical planning and treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Anatomic Pathology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Medical Genetics

Background:

  • Polythelia (supernumerary nipples) affects 1-5% of the population, while polymastia (ectopic breast tissue) is less common, often found along the milk line.
  • Ectopic breast tissue shares functional and pathological similarities with normal mammary glands, making it susceptible to benign and malignant alterations.
  • Supernumerary breast tissue can present diagnostic challenges, particularly when appearing as an isolated nodule without inflammation, potentially mimicking other conditions like lymphoma.

Observation:

  • A case report details a 21-year-old female presenting with a solid nodular mass in the axilla, initially suspected as lymphadenopathy.
  • The axillary mass was surgically removed, and intraoperative histology revealed a fibroadenoma within supernumerary breast tissue.
  • Ultrasonography may be insufficient for diagnosing ectopic breast tissue masses due to the limited surrounding mammary tissue.

Findings:

  • Fibroadenoma is a common benign breast tumor that can occur in ectopic breast tissue.
  • Accurate preoperative diagnosis is essential for effective surgical management of ectopic breast tissue abnormalities.
  • While rare, malignant degeneration of ectopic breast tissue is possible and requires standard breast cancer treatment protocols.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of considering ectopic breast tissue in the differential diagnosis of axillary masses.
  • Timely and accurate diagnosis of benign or malignant conditions in supernumerary breast tissue ensures appropriate therapeutic strategies.
  • Further research into the imaging and diagnostic modalities for ectopic breast tissue is warranted to improve patient outcomes.
