Etanercept has been used for psoriatic arthritis for 8 years. This review examines data on combining 6 FDA-approved biologics with traditional systemic antipsoriatics for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.
Area of Science:
- Dermatology
- Rheumatology
- Immunology
Background:
- Psoriatic arthritis treatment has evolved with biologic therapies.
- Etanercept, a biologic agent, received FDA approval for psoriatic arthritis in 2002.
- Six biologic therapies are now approved for psoriasis and/or psoriatic arthritis.
Purpose of the Study:
- To review available data on combining biologic therapies with traditional systemic antipsoriatics.
- To provide an overview of current treatment strategies for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.
Main Methods:
- Literature review of studies on combination therapies.
- Analysis of data regarding the use of biologics alongside systemic antipsoriatics.
Main Results:
- Data on combining 6 FDA-approved biologics with traditional systemic antipsoriatics is reviewed.
- The article synthesizes current evidence on these combination treatment approaches.
Conclusions:
- Combination therapy with biologics and systemic antipsoriatics is a relevant treatment strategy.
- Further research may be needed to fully understand the efficacy and safety of these combinations.
