Summary

Apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene variations are not a direct risk factor for depression in older adults. However, the APOE*4 allele may be linked to cognitive difficulties, suggesting a role in some depressive symptoms.

Background:

  • Apolipoprotein E (APOE) is a key gene associated with Alzheimer's disease risk.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between APOE gene polymorphisms and depression in elderly adults.

Main Methods:

  • A Mexican population-based sample of individuals over 60 years old (n=1566) was genotyped for APOE polymorphisms using TaqMan assays.

Main Results:

  • No significant association was found between APOE alleles/genotypes and depression or anxiety.
  • Individuals with the APOE*4 allele showed more impairment in thinking and concentration compared to those with the APOE*3 allele.

Conclusions:

  • Genetic variations in the APOE gene may influence specific depressive symptoms in late-onset depression.
  • APOE is not identified as a specific risk factor for depression itself, but may affect cognitive aspects of depressive symptoms.
