Background:

  • Understanding this relationship is crucial for managing MS symptoms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate differences in perfectionistic traits between MS patients and healthy individuals.
  • To examine the relationship between positive and negative perfectionism and fatigue symptoms in MS.
  • To explore the role of perfectionism in the experience of fatigue in multiple sclerosis.

Main Methods:

  • 120 MS patients and 120 healthy controls completed validated scales.
  • Measures included the Positive and Negative Perfectionism Scale (PANPS), Modified Fatigue Impact Scale (MFIS), Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI).
  • Statistical analyses were used to compare groups and assess correlations.

Main Results:

  • MS patients exhibited lower positive perfectionism and higher negative perfectionism compared to controls.
  • MS patients also reported increased depressive symptoms.
  • Both positive and negative perfectionism dimensions were significantly associated with fatigue severity in MS patients.

Conclusions:

  • Fatigue symptoms in MS are strongly linked to perfectionistic characteristics.
  • Negative (maladaptive) perfectionism may predispose individuals to or perpetuate fatigue in MS.
  • These findings suggest potential targets for clinical interventions aimed at managing fatigue in MS.
