Gastric acid secretion and parietal cell mass: effect of sex hormones
1Department of Human Physiology, Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Jos, Nigeria.
Abstract:
The role of sex hormones on parietal cell function and number was studied in the rat. Ovariectomy significantly increased parietal cell mass (from 18.26 +/- 0.16 x 10(6) to 24.14 +/- 0.89 x 10(6] as well as basal acid secretion (from 3.49 +/- 0.06 to 3.63 +/- 0.05 mu Eq/10 min). Castration decreased the number of parietal cells in the gastric mucosa of male rats from 25.57 +/- 0.18 x 10(6) to 18.65 +/- 0.12 x 10(6) and basal acid secretion (from 3.99 +/- 0.03 to 3.50 +/- 0.06 mu Eq/10 min). The results suggest that male and female sex hormones regulate basal acid secretion via their effects on the parietal cell.

Stomach pH Regulation
The acid-secreting gastric mucosal epithelial cells (parietal cells) lining the stomach lumen maintain the low pH in the lumen. Numerous ion transporters and channels on these parietal...

In the antrum region, G cells secrete the gastrin hormone that binds to gastrin-cholecystokinin-B (CCK2) receptors on parietal and enterochromaffin-like (ECL) cells in the fundic glands. Simultaneously, the vagus nerve releases acetylcholine, which binds to M3...
Hormones Secreted by the Stomach
Each of these hormones secreted by different enteroendocrine cells plays a unique role in digestion. Here are a few examples:
Gastric Phase of Digestion
When food enters the stomach, it stretches the stomach walls and activates stretch receptors. This triggers local reflexes of the enteric nervous system, mediated through the myenteric plexus. These...
Mucosal Barrier of the Stomach
Within parietal cells, carbonic acid is first formed through the reaction of water and carbon dioxide. The dissociation of carbonic acid releases bicarbonate and hydrogen ions. The bicarbonate...
