Summary

Androgen receptors (AR) are present in normal and nodular thyroid tissues. Nuclear AR levels are higher in normal thyroid tissue, especially in men, suggesting androgens influence thyroid growth and potentially protect against thyroid disease.

Background:

  • Thyroid tissue is known to be influenced by various hormones, but the role of androgens is less understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the presence and distribution of cytosolic and nuclear androgen receptors (AR) in normal and nodular human thyroid tissues.
  • To compare AR levels between normal and diseased (nodular) thyroid tissues.
  • To explore potential sex-based differences in AR content within thyroid tissue.

  • Tissue samples from 12 women and 6 men, including normal thyroid and benign nodular tissue, were analyzed.

    • Androgens appear to influence thyroid tissue, with higher nuclear AR concentrations in normal male thyroid tissue.
    • Reduced AR levels in nodular and goitrous tissues suggest androgens may have an antagonistic role in thyroid growth.
    • These findings may explain the lower incidence of thyroid diseases in men and support an anti-proliferative effect of androgens on thyroid tissue.
