Difficulties in diagnosing diseases of the elderly
Abstract:
Although elderly people constitute a considerable proportion of medical practice, physicians often feel discouraged when faced with their complex medical and social problems. Age alone is not a good indicator of a person's ability to respond to treatment, although it may suggest the likelihood of some conditions being present. Careful inquiry may suggest appropriate treatment.Although the history of illness may be comples, the problem-oriented approach can bring meaning out of verbal chaos. Treatment of each problem can lead to 'progressive therapeutic benefit'. Ongoing surveillance and follow-up can be handled by allied health personnel if they are appropriately instructed by the practicing physician.
