Sports for the over-40s
Abstract:
In recent years medical researchers have suggested that exercise has a very definite influence on health and disease. Although this fact is far from new, its application has only recently become the concern of the public and the medical profession. The news media have found it good copy, and various commercial enterprises have flourished, from spas to private clubs, with an assortment of ideas and equipment to promote fitness. The family physician must understand the meaning of physical fitness and its application to his patient's personal situation. The need for regular, sensibly-designed programs - often tailormade - must be emphasized. This is particularly true for the patient over 40.

Exercise and Cardiovascular Response
Light to moderate physical activity initiates a series of interconnected responses in the body. The heart rate modestly increases in anticipation of the workout, followed by widespread vasodilation as oxygen consumption by skeletal muscles increases. This results in decreased peripheral resistance, increased capillary blood flow, and accelerated...

Cellular Clock Theory

Endurance exercises
Endurance exercises involve running, swimming, or cycling, which require repetitive movements with low force output. When a person engages in endurance exercise, a few noticeable changes occur in their skeletal muscles. For instance, the number of capillaries...
