Cellular uptake of copper by hepatocytes

Selective accumulation of copper in isolated hepatocytes compared to fibroblasts is due in part to decreased copper efflux, perhaps the result of the presence of high-affinity intracellular copper-binding proteins. Preferential accumulation of copper by the liver may serve to protect extrahepatic tissues from copper toxicity.
