Association between toll-like receptor expression and human papillomavirus type 16 persistence

Toll-like receptor (TLR) expression in the cervix is linked to clearing human papillomavirus (HPV) infections. Upregulated TLRs, particularly for HPV 16, correlate with viral clearance and interferon production, suggesting a role in innate immunity.

Conclusions:
- Dampened TLR expression in cervical mucosa may be a type-specific mechanism used by HPV 16 to evade innate immune responses and establish persistence.
- Upregulation of TLRs and subsequent cytokine induction are important for clearing HPV 16 infections.
