    Summary

    Nonpolio enteroviral infections in US infants under two months old were severe in 74%, often presenting as meningitis or systemic illness. Echoviruses and Coxsackie B viruses were the most common culprits.

    Background:

    • Enteroviral infections pose a significant threat to infants.
    • Understanding the epidemiology and clinical spectrum of these infections in early infancy is crucial for timely diagnosis and management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the characteristics of nonpolio enteroviral infections in infants less than two months of age in the United States.
    • To identify common clinical manifestations, causative enterovirus types, and demographic patterns.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of surveillance data for 338 infants with nonpolio enterovirus isolates reported to the Centers for Disease Control between 1972 and 1975.
