Rous Sarcoma Virus (RSV) and Cancer

Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. His experiments clearly demonstrated that some cancers could be caused by infectious agents and led to the discovery of many more cancer-causing viruses in animals as well as humans.
RSV is a retrovirus that contains two copies of a plus-strand  RNA genome. Its genome consists of four main open...

Summary

This case study highlights a rare bone cancer, leiomyosarcoma, in the distal femur. Accurate diagnosis using immunohistochemistry is crucial to differentiate it from fibrosarcoma.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Oncology
  • Surgical Pathology

Context:

  • A rare case of malignant bone tumor, leiomyosarcoma, occurred in the distal femur.
  • The initial diagnosis was fibrosarcoma, necessitating further investigation.

Purpose:

  • To present a case of distal femur leiomyosarcoma.
  • To emphasize the importance of detailed histological examination and immunohistochemistry in diagnosing bone tumors.

Summary:

  • A patient underwent large resection of a distal femur tumor, followed by a custom distal femur replacement.
  • Immunohistochemistry confirmed leiomyosarcoma, correcting the initial fibrosarcoma diagnosis.

Impact:

  • Highlights the diagnostic challenges in rare bone tumors.
  • Underscores the critical role of immunohistochemistry in accurate oncological diagnosis and treatment planning.
