This study investigated the link between mannose-binding lectin (MBL) gene diversity and oral lichen planus (OLP). Researchers found no significant genetic association between MBL-2 gene polymorphism and OLP development.
Area of Science:
- Immunogenetics
- Oral Medicine
- Molecular Biology
Background:
- Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-α) is implicated in oral lichen planus (OLP) pathogenesis.
- Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) gene polymorphism may influence TNF-α production.
- Understanding MBL's role could offer insights into OLP etiology.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the association between MBL-2 gene genetic diversity and oral lichen planus (OLP).
- To determine if MBL gene variants are relevant in the development of OLP.
Main Methods:
- Real-time PCR was used to amplify the MBL-2 gene in 45 OLP patients and 45 healthy controls.
- Genotype and allele frequencies of MBL-2 were analyzed.
- Statistical analysis was performed to compare OLP patients and healthy volunteers.
Main Results:
- No statistically significant differences were observed in MBL-2 genotype frequencies between OLP patients and controls (p = 0.546).
- Allele frequencies for MBL-2 also showed no significant variation between the groups (p = 0.497).
- The distribution of A/A, A/0, and 0/0 genotypes did not differ significantly.
Conclusions:
- The study found no significant association between MBL-2 gene polymorphism and oral lichen planus.
- Genetic diversity of MBL does not appear to be a risk factor for OLP in the studied population.
- Further research may explore other genetic or environmental factors in OLP pathogenesis.
