Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare knee extensor muscle recruitment, torque production, and perceived exertion between healthy young and old adults.
  • To investigate age-related differences in neuromuscular responses during isometric knee extension.

Main Methods:

  • Subjects performed isometric knee extension contractions at various intensities (% MVC and perceived exertion levels).
  • Surface electromyography (EMG) recorded vastus medialis (VM), vastus lateralis (VL), and rectus femoris (RF) muscle activity.
  • Torque and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) were measured.

Main Results:

  • Young adults reported higher perceived exertion than older adults for equivalent % MVC.
  • Young adults showed greater VL and RF EMG relative to VM, unlike older adults.
