Perineal rectosigmoidectomy for gangrenous rectal prolapse

• An extremely rare case of incarcerated acute rectal prolapse is presented.

• Emergency perineal proctosigmoidectomy (Altemeier operation) and a diverting loop sigmoid colostomy were performed.
• The postoperative course was uneventful, with successful colostomy closure and an excellent final outcome.
