Background:

Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) consumers are often high healthcare utilizers.
CAM-based wellness programs may influence conventional medical care consumption.
Understanding the interplay between CAM and conventional medicine is vital for policy.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate conventional medicine utilization among wellness-motivated CAM consumers.
To determine if CAM therapies for wellness replace conventional medical care.
To analyze the association between CAM use motivation and healthcare utilization patterns.

Main Methods:

Analysis of a nationally representative sample of healthcare consumers.
Distinction between illness-motivated and wellness-motivated CAM users.
Statistical examination of CAM use and conventional medicine utilization rates.

Main Results:

CAM use motivation is not associated with lower conventional medicine utilization probability.
Wellness-motivated CAM users do not show reduced rates of conventional medical care consumption.
CAM therapies for wellness do not appear to replace conventional medical services.

Conclusions:

CAM use, whether for illness or wellness, does not displace conventional medical care.
Policy decisions regarding integrated health and wellness programs require a nuanced understanding of consumer behavior.
Balancing health initiatives with economic considerations necessitates evidence on pluralistic healthcare environments.
