Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate work productivity in healthy OSA patients.
  • To identify correlations between work productivity and OSA patient characteristics.

Main Methods:

  • 115 working-age OSA patients without comorbidities were assessed.
  • Work productivity was measured using the Endicott Work Productivity Scale (EWPS).
  • Daytime sleepiness was quantified using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale.

Main Results:

  • A significant correlation was found between EWPS and Epworth Sleepiness Scale scores (r2 = 0.127, P < 0.001).
  • Somnolent OSA patients reported significantly higher EWPS scores (31.2 +/- 16.2) compared to nonsomnolent patients (20.8 +/- 11).
  • No other sleep or anthropometric characteristics correlated with EWPS.

Conclusions:

  • Daytime sleepiness negatively affects the work productivity of otherwise healthy OSA patients.
  • The findings underscore the importance of screening working individuals for OSA and associated sleepiness.
  • Addressing sleepiness in OSA patients may enhance occupational functioning.
