Assessment of Vascular Function in Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease

Background:

  • Erectile dysfunction (ED) is highly prevalent among patients undergoing dialysis.
  • Limited data exists on ED prevalence and contributing factors in this specific patient population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of ED in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on maintenance hemodialysis.
  • To identify factors associated with ED in this cohort.

Main Methods:

  • An analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted with 50 male ESRD patients on hemodialysis.
  • The Urdu version of the International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5) was used to assess ED.
  • Demographic data and laboratory parameters (hemoglobin, urea, HBsAg, Anti HCV) were collected.

Main Results:

  • The prevalence of ED was 86%, with a mean IIEF-5 score of 10.36.
  • Severe ED affected 64.7% of patients.
  • Diabetes mellitus, age over 50, high pre-dialysis urea, and Anti-HCV positivity were significant factors associated with ED.

Conclusions:

  • A majority of ESRD patients on maintenance hemodialysis experience ED.
  • Hemodialysis does not appear to improve sexual dysfunction.
  • Key contributing factors to ED include diabetes, older age, elevated urea levels, and Anti-HCV positivity.
