Young adults can prevent weight gain using self-regulation. Both Small Changes (SC) and Large Changes (LC) approaches showed promise in a pilot study, with LC leading to greater initial weight loss.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the preliminary efficacy of two self-regulation approaches for weight-gain prevention in young adults.
  • To compare the effects of Small Changes (SC) and Large Changes (LC) interventions.
  • To assess adherence, weight change, and participant satisfaction.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled pilot study involving 52 young adults (aged 18-35).
  • Participants were assigned to either an 8-week Small Changes or Large Changes program, both emphasizing daily self-weighing.
  • Outcomes including adherence, weight change, and satisfaction were measured at 0, 8, and 16 weeks.

  • High adherence (84% session attendance) and completion rates (86.5% post-treatment, 84.5% follow-up) were observed.
