Summary

Laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) for men with acute appendicitis took longer than open appendectomy (OA) and showed no significant benefits in hospital stay or recovery. OA remains a viable option for male patients.

Background:

The efficacy of laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) for acute appendicitis in men remains debated.
While LA offers diagnostic advantages for women, its utility in men is questioned.

Purpose of the Study:

To compare open appendectomy (OA) versus laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) in male patients with suspected acute appendicitis.

Main Methods:

Prospective randomized trial involving 147 male patients over 15 years old.
Patients were randomized to either OA or LA.
Primary endpoint: postoperative hospital length of stay; Secondary endpoints: postoperative analgesia, morbidity, and recovery period.

Main Results:

LA took significantly longer to perform than OA (60 min vs. 45 min).
No significant differences were observed in postoperative hospital stay, analgesia, morbidity, or recovery period between LA and OA.

Conclusions:

Laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) offers no significant advantages over open appendectomy (OA) in terms of hospital stay or recovery for men.
LA requires a longer operative time compared to OA in this patient group.
