[When is a difference statistically significant?]

From a very simple example (8 deaths observed in one group verus 2 in the other), we explain in details how to determine whether a difference is statistically significant. The arbitrariness of the 5% limit used to conclude that a difference is significant, is discussed. The difference between a one-sided and a two-sided situation is described in an appendix.
