Acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding from the appendix is uncommon. This case report details a successful laparoscopic appendectomy for a patient with hematochezia due to solitary appendiceal bleeding.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Surgical Oncology
Background:
- Acute lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage is a common clinical presentation.
- Appendiceal bleeding is an exceedingly rare cause of acute lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage.
Observation:
- A 42-year-old male presented with hematochezia.
- Abdominal computed tomography revealed active contrast leakage in the distal appendix.
- Colonoscopy identified active bleeding from the appendiceal orifice.
Findings:
- A solitary appendiceal bleeding source was identified.
- Laparoscopic appendectomy was performed for treatment.
- Postoperative follow-up showed no recurrence of hematochezia.
- Histopathological examination revealed eroded appendiceal mucosa and focal inflammation without vascular malformations.
Implications:
- This case highlights the appendix as a potential source of acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding.
- Laparoscopic appendectomy is an effective treatment for solitary appendiceal bleeding.
- Early diagnosis and surgical intervention can lead to favorable outcomes.

Inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD, encompasses a group of disorders characterized by chronic inflammation or ulceration of the gastrointestinal tract.
Risk Factors
The exact cause of IBD remains unclear, although it is believed to be due to a mix of genetic, environmental, microbial, and immune factors. Genetic factors are significant in determining susceptibility to IBD, with family history being a critical risk factor. Individuals with a first-degree relative who has IBD are at...
