Modeling in Therapy

Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.

Techniques of Therapeutic Communication II: Focusing, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing

Focusing involves centering a conversation on a message's critical elements or concepts. Focusing is valuable if the talk is vague or patients begin to repeat themselves. Sometimes, when patients are asked about their symptoms, they may go off-topic and try to tell their entire life story. Respectfully, the nurse should bring the conversation back into focus.
This therapeutic technique can also be used when a patient brings up pertinent information during a health-related conversation. The...

Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques IV

Stress often leads to unhealthy habits like smoking, excessive drinking, and overeating, which offer short-term relief but ultimately increase long-term health risks. These behaviors create a cycle that temporarily lowers stress levels but can result in severe long-term health consequences. Breaking these habits is essential to reduce the risk of chronic diseases and improve overall well-being. Three primary changes that support better health include quitting smoking, reducing alcohol intake,...

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Psychology
  • Mental Health Interventions

Background:

  • Suicide is a major global public health issue.
  • Gatekeeper training is an evidence-based suicide prevention strategy.
  • Previous research shows gatekeeper training improves knowledge and attitudes, but not necessarily skills.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of gatekeeper training on observed suicide prevention skills.
  • To identify predictors of skill improvement after gatekeeper training.

Main Methods:

  • 50 university employees participated in a community gatekeeper training.
  • Participants were videotaped interacting with a standardized actor before and after training.
  • Trained raters assessed general and suicide-specific skills from the videos.

Main Results:

  • The percentage of participants meeting criteria for acceptable gatekeeper skills increased from 10% pre-training to 54% post-training.
  • No pre-training variables predicted skill enhancement.
  • The training demonstrated a significant positive effect on observed gatekeeper skills.

Conclusions:

  • Gatekeeper training effectively enhances suicide-specific skills for most participants.
  • Additional methods like behavioral rehearsal might be needed for skill development in some individuals.
  • Further research is needed to link observed skills to real-world application.
